Prince George’s County state’s attorney Aisha Braveboy won the special Democratic primary election for county executive.
Braveboy earned more than 46 percent of the vote in the March 4 special primary, according to the Maryland state elections board. She defeated former county executive Rushern Baker III and at-large county council member Calvin Hawkins II.
Braveboy declared victory in the race alongside Gov. Wes Moore during a watch party on March 4 in New Carrollton, according to the Washington Post.
Eight candidates, including Braveboy, Baker and Hawkins, vied for the Democratic nomination for county executive.
Braveboy is in her second term as state’s attorney, a role she’s held since 2019. Her office has contributed to an almost 40 percent decrease in carjackings in the county, according to her website.
Braveboy also served as a Maryland state delegate from 2007 to 2015, where she worked to reduce mass incarceration, increase opportunities for women and minority-owned businesses and lessen health disparities in the state, according to the Prince George’s County website.

The special election comes after Angela Alsobrooks resigned from her position in December following her U.S. Senate race victory. Tara Jackson, who was previously the county’s chief administration officer, serves as the acting county executive.
Throughout her campaign, Braveboy received endorsements from many local officials, including Moore and county council members Wala Blegay and Krystal Oriadha.
Braveboy told The Diamondback on Feb. 20 that she decided to run for the seat because she wants to address crime at its root causes, which can be tough to do in her current position.
She said she aims to expand retail and dining developments within the community and improve the cleanliness and maintenance of public areas.
“I agree that this county has to be beautiful. The people here are beautiful, the county should look like and should be a reflection of the people,” Braveboy said.
Braveboy also hopes to improve the county’s education system, create more jobs within the county and get rid of property tax increases, according to her website.
Braveboy will face Republican U.S. Air Force veteran Jonathan White in the June 3 general election.
