Maryland football has reportedly hired Pep Hamilton as its new offensive coordinator, filling the role previously held by Josh Gattis, according to NFL Network’s Ian Rapaport.

Pep Hamilton is the father of incoming freshman quarterback Jackson Hamilton, who signed with Maryland in December. The three-star recruit is joined by four-star Malik Washington as the Terps’ two freshman signal callers.

The offensive coordinator will work with a largely unproven but high-upside quarterback room next season. No quarterbacks on the Terps’ roster have significant playing time at the college level, but Washington and incoming UCLA transfer Justyn Martin are the likeliest to start.

Pep Hamilton hasn’t coached since 2022, when he was the Houston Texans’ offensive coordinator. Before that, he served as the Los Angeles Chargers’ quarterbacks coach during Justin Herbert’s offensive rookie of the year campaign in 2020.

His coaching career has largely been in the NFL — his latest NCAA role was as Michigan’s passing game coordinator and assistant coach in 2017 and 2018.

The Charlotte, North Carolina, native started his journey as Howard’s quarterbacks coach in 1997. His other collegiate stint came at Stanford from 2010 to 2012, which included a role as offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach during Andrew Luck’s 2011 Heisman Trophy runner-up campaign.

Pep Hamilton also spent 2020 as the head coach and general manager of the XFL’s D.C. Defenders.

Like coach Michael Locksley, Pep Hamilton interviewed for an open NFL head coach position earlier in the offseason. The New England Patriots spoke with Pep Hamilton in early January.

Instead, the 50-year-old will head to College Park to try and reinvigorate an offense full of fresh faces.
