Maryland football’s 34-7 victory over Rutgers on Saturday got the Terps to 4-2 on the season, meaning Matt Canada’s team is only two wins away from bowl eligibility.

The Terps didn’t make a bowl game last season after finishing 4-8, and their last bowl appearance came in 2016 when Maryland traveled to Detroit’s Ford Field and suffered a 36-30 loss to Boston College in the Quick Lane Bowl.

Maryland should be favored in at least two of its remaining games — a home matchup with Illinois and an away game against Indiana — so six wins is very attainable number for the Terps this season.

Because of that, national media outlets are including the Terrapins in their weekly bowl projections. Here’s a look at how those projections look after Week 7 of the college football season.

ESPN: New Era Pinstripe Bowl in Yankee Stadium (Dec. 27 at 5:15 p.m. in New York City) vs. Virginia Tech/Syracuse

Both of ESPN’s writers who project the bowl games, Kyle Bonagura and Mitch Sherman, have the Terps going up to the Bronx for the Pinstripe Bowl. However, the opponents differ, with Bonagura having Maryland take on former ACC rival Virginia Tech and Sherman having the Terps face former ACC non-rival Syracuse.

A matchup with Virginia Tech would be a cool throwback for the Terrapins. Maryland beat the Hokies in their final ACC meeting back in 2013 in an overtime victory in Blacksburg that gave the Terps their bowl eligibility. The 2018 Virginia Tech team is currently 4-2 and is without starting QB Josh Jackson due to injury.

A date with Syracuse, however, would be a good money pull for the bowl game itself, with the Orange also playing their home games in New York (but in reality, College Park is actually closer to Yankee Stadium than Syracuse is).

The Terps last played the Orange in a non-conference battle in 2014. Maryland won that one 34-20 in the Carrier Dome. This matchup would also start a stretch of three straight seasons of the Terrapins playing Syracuse, as the two teams have a home-and-home series scheduled for 2019 and 2020.

Sports Illustrated: New Era Pinstripe Bowl in Yankee Stadium (Dec. 27 at 5:15 p.m. in New York City) vs. Virginia

Eric Single of Sports Illustrated also has the Terps heading to Yankee Stadium, but he has Maryland facing a different former ACC rival from the commonwealth. The Terps beat the Cavaliers 27-26 in College Park in their last ACC meeting back in 2013. This Virginia team is currently 4-2 on the year and is coming off a big upset win over Miami.

Sporting News: New Era Pinstripe Bowl in Yankee Stadium (Dec. 27 at 5:15 p.m. in New York City) vs. Virginia

Bill Bender of Sporting News agrees with Sports Illustrated, and has the Terps continuing a longstanding rivalry with Virginia. Maryland leads the all-time series 44-32-2.

CBS Sports: New Era Pinstripe Bowl in Yankee Stadium (Dec. 27 at 5:15 p.m. in New York City) vs. Virginia Tech

Jerry Palm of CBS Sports echoes ESPN in the Terps-Hokies projection. The Pinstripe Bowl, which has been around since 2010, has ACC and Big Ten tie-ins, which is why Maryland would have a good chance to take on an old ACC rival.

SB Nation: No bowl game

Jason Kirk of SB Nation is only the only major bowl-projector that did not put Maryland in his projections this week. I guess he doesn’t believe in jet sweeps. (He has Syracuse playing Indiana in the Pinstripe Bowl, for what it’s worth)

College Football News: New Era Pinstripe Bowl in Yankee Stadium (Dec. 27 at 5:15 p.m. in New York City) vs. Duke

Here’s the one that’s really fun. College Football News also has the Terps going to New York, but the good about this projection is the opponent: Duke. The Terrapins haven’t played the Blue Devils since Ralph Friedgen’s last season in 2010 when Maryland beat Duke 21-16 at Maryland Stadium. Duke won’t play Maryland in basketball any time soon, so this could at least be some sort of consolation. The Blue Devils are 5-1 so far this season.
