The Maryland men’s lacrosse team earned the No. 1 ranking this week with a win over then-No. 15 Penn State and the help of a local squad.

On Friday, UMBC beat then-No. 1 Albany. Two days later, coach John Tillman’s team defeated the Nittany Lions, allowing the Terps to earn the top spot for the first time this season.

The Terps trailed at Penn State for most of the game, but midfielder Connor Kelly’s six goals helped them to a 13-12 win. The Nittany Lions climbed one spot to No. 14 in this week’s rankings.

Maryland (9-1, 2-0 Big Ten) spent one week at No. 3 but had been No. 2 in every other ranking this year.

Albany fell a spot to No. 2. Maryland is scheduled to face No. 8 Rutgers (8-3, 1-1) on Sunday night in College Park.
