The Minnesota Timberwolves waived Melo Trimble on Oct. 14, but the former Maryland men’s basketball star has found a new home with the Iowa Wolves, the Timberwolves’ G-League affiliate.

Trimble decided to join a G-League team rather than try out for an overseas club. Trimble’s move to play in Des Moines, Iowa, keeps him on the NBA radar despite having the chance to make more money on a foreign squad. The 6-foot-3, 195-pound guard can still sign with any NBA team.

Trimble signed a partially guaranteed deal with the Timberwolves in September, which ensured his spot on the team’s training camp roster. But Minnesota instead kept point guards Jeff Teague, Tyus Jones and Aaron Brooks.

The Upper Marlboro native notched four points and one rebound in one preseason appearance. The Philadelphia 76ers signed Trimble after he went undrafted. He averaged 10.3 points and 1.3 steals in three Las Vegas Summer League games.

Trimble averaged 16.8 points per game as a junior at Maryland last season and was named to the All-Big Ten first team. He led the Terps to three consecutive NCAA tournaments.
