With two outs in the tenth inning, Cal State Fullerton second baseman Taylor Bryant drove the ball to deep center for his first home run of the season. The sophomore’s hit marked the only run in the Terrapins baseball team’s 1-0 loss to the Titans on Sunday.
Left-hander Jake Drossner, who entered the game 0-1 with a 5.40 ERA, started his fifth game Sunday for the Terps. With a career-high 88 pitches, the junior limited the Titans to three hits over eight scoreless innings.
The Titans turned to left-hander John Gavin, who entered the game 5-1 with a 4.53 ERA. He went seven scoreless innings while allowing just three hits and recording six strikeouts.
Gavin and the rest of the Titans’ pitching staff combined to strand all seven Terps base runners in the contest.
In the first inning, shortstop Kevin Smith recorded the Terps’ first hit with a single to center. After catcher Kevin Martir was hit by a pitch, third baseman Jose Cuas was robbed at the wall, but Smith tagged up on the play to put runners on the corners with two outs. But right fielder Anthony Papio stuck out swinging, unable to capitalize on the scoring threat.
First baseman Justin Morris’ second-inning hit was the Terps’ last until the sixth inning, but Drossner’s pitching kept them in the game. After allowing a single in the fourth, he retired eight consecutive batters.
The Terps failed to capitalize on another scoring chance in the sixth. Martir grounded into a double play after Smith led off the inning with a single. Still, the Terps put two men on base with two outs before designated hitter Jamal Wade grounded out to end to inning.
Drossner had to escape a scoring threat of his own in the seventh after allowing a single and walking center fielder Tyler Stieb. He induced a ground out to shortstop to keep the game scoreless, though.
Left-hander Alex Robinson, who entered the contest with zero earned runs allowed in 15 appearances, replaced Drossner in the ninth inning. He pitched out of a ninth-inning jam with the help of his defense throwing out a runner at the plate.
But Robinson couldn’t keep the Titans off the board in the tenth when Bryant took him deep for his first blemish of the season.
