After his record-breaking 39-point outing Wednesday, Terrapins men’s basketball rookie center Diamond Stone has been named the Big Ten Player and Freshman of the Week. They are his first two weekly honors.

Stone entered Wednesday’s Big Ten opener against Penn State with a career high of 16 points, but the 6-foot-11 center dropped 32 points in the second half alone. His 39-point effort set a new program record for points by a freshman in a single game, surpassing Joe Smith’s 33-point performance in 1993.

The Wisconsin native also set program records for most free throws attempted (25) and most free throws made (19) in a game during the Terps’ 70-64 come-from-behind win. Stone also added a career-best 12 rebounds, including eight on the offensive glass.

He became just the fourth player in the Big Ten since 2000 to record at least 35 points and haul in at least 10 rebounds in a single game.

The Wisconsin native, who came off the bench in both games this week, scored 10 points on 4-for-4 shooting Saturday in a 72-59 victory at Northwestern. He will return to his home state Jan. 9 when the Terps battle Wisconsin at 1 p.m.
