The Terrapin men’s tennis team split to attend two tournaments, the Navy Invitational and the Virginia Fall Invitational.
Most of the team went to Annapolis, while juniors Andrew Orban and Boris Fetbroyt represented the team in Charlottesville, Va.
The Terps combined at Navy with some of Princeton’s players to form a team.
Sophomore David Kwon beat Pat Adams of St. Joseph’s 6-2, 6-4, while Nickolai Nielsen beat Nick Tuxen 6-3, 6-1.
On Saturday, the Terp and Tiger combination played the host Midshipmen. On the singles courts, the amalgam was again led by Nielsen, who beat Navy’s Johnny Waters 7-5, 6-1. The only singles loss of the day came when Nate Helms of Navy beat Kwon, 6-4, 6-2, but the doubles team of Kwon and Nielsen made up for it with an 8-6 win against Navy’s Nelms and Waters.
Sunday’s matches ended after press time.
In Charlottesville, Orban and Fetbroyt held their own on Friday before being defeated Saturday in a small field that was rife with talent, as eight singles players and 11 doubles teams all ranked in the country’s top 60.
Friday started out promising for the Terps. Orban, despite losing the first game, won his first-round match on Friday against Marcus Echtler of Stetson 5-7, 6-2 and 7-5. Fetbroyt also won his Friday match, beating James Madison’s Jesse Tarr 6-4, 3-6, 6-3.
The day ended on a sour note, though, when Orban lost in the quarterfinals to fourth-seeded Kiril Dimitrov of Duke in two sets, 6-2, 7-5.
The Terps’ bad luck continued to Saturday. Fetbroyt’s second-round fate matched Orban’s; he fell quickly to No. 1-seed Alexander Ermakov of Harvard, 6-4, 6-3.
