Right-hander Mike Shawaryn, the Terrapins baseball team’s ace the past two seasons, has been moved to start Sunday this week against Ohio State. Right-hander Taylor Bloom will start Friday, and right-hander Brian Shaffer will start Saturday.

Shawaryn, the Terps’ all-time wins leader, holds the worst ERA of the Terps’ weekend rotation this season (4.15). Bloom and Shaffer hold ERAs of 2.36 and 2.74, respectively.

Last season, Shawaryn held a 13-2 record and 1.71 ERA as the only consistent weekend starter for the Terps. The junior has exceeded his loss total from lost season in just seven starts with a 2-3 record.

The Terps have lost in Shawaryn’s past three starts. Two weeks ago at Iowa, Shawaryn gave up five runs over five innings, and last week against High Point, the Carneys Point, New Jersey, native pitched a career-low 3.2 innings after allowing three runs.

Shawaryn was tabbed as a preseason All-American by multiple publications this season and was projected as a first-round pick in this summer’s MLB draft by multiple publications. While he’s faltered, Bloom and Shaffer have both thrown two complete games this year.

While Shawaryn’s pitches rarely exited the strike zone in the past, coach John Szefc said, he’s been throwing outside of it as of late and struggling to recover.
