Maryland volleyball announced Thursday the groundbreaking of its team suite, a project estimated to cost about $800,000, according to the school.

The Terps first presented the project in August as a volleyball-specific locker room, entryway and lounge adjacent to Xfinity Pavilion, the team’s home court. It will also include a study hall, video room and kitchenette.

“Everyone here at Maryland Volleyball is excited that our locker room project has officially broken ground,” coach Adam Hughes said in a statement. “The team suite will directly benefit our student-athletes as we continue to move our program forward.”

When the plan was announced last summer, the Terps were poised for a breakout campaign. The season ended with them narrowly missing the NCAA tournament. Since then, former coach Steve Aird departed for Indiana, while Maryland’s first-ever high school Under Armour First-Team All-Americans — pin hitters Gia Milana and Samantha Drechsel — announced their intentions to transfer.

The state of the program changed during its turbulent winter break, but Hughes, who was hired Jan. 23 to stabilize the squad, still has plans to bring Maryland to the next level in the Big Ten. The Terps haven’t made postseason play since 2005.

Hughes said Maryland will be in the mix for transfers to bolster his depleted squad, and middle blocker Rainelle Jones, the No. 32 senior recruit in the country by PrepVolleyball, will join as well.

“We have some lofty goals and the team suite project will play an important role in attaining those goals,” Hughes said in a statement. “The future of Maryland Volleyball is bright.”
