After losing four starters from last season’s Sweet 16 team, Maryland men’s basketball gave its fans a preview of how the team will move on from its most successful season in more than a decade at Maryland Madness.

Freshmen Anthony Cowan and Kevin Huerter were featured in the three-point contest, while Huerter was joined by freshman Micah Thomas and senior LG Gill, a graduate transfer from Duquesne, in the dunk contest.

The three-point contest was won by a men’s and women’s duo of guards Jaylen Brantley and Sarah Myers. In the battle of newcomers in the dunk contest, Gill managed to top Huerter and Thomas in an exciting contest for the players and fans alike.

For Gill, who had spent his last three seasons at a mid-major school, Maryland Madness was an exciting new opportunity at a bigger program.

“I never did anything like this, so it was definitely an overwhelming expierence,” Gill said. “It was fun, everybody brought energy and I enjoyed the fans. But I’ve never done anything like this, so it was definitely great.”

Huerter also enjoyed his first chance to play in front of Maryland’s fans.

“It was a lot of fun, especially the introductions. It was definitely an exciting night,” he said.

Maryland finds itself needing to replace four members of its most successful team since 2003. Maryland Madness gave everyone a glimpse at who they will be counting on to do it.
